Introduction
If you’re thinking of making a change in the world due to the HIV/AIDS pandemic, then September 10 offers you a volunteering program on a HIV/AIDS volunteer where by this program is aimed at giving care and support to the HIV infected and also creating awareness to vulnerable groups like the youth about the dangers of HIV/Aids.
The program overview
This program encourages volunteers to learn and share their knowledge with other volunteers during their volunteering period. Volunteers are urgently required to work in the community, orphanage, neighboring schools, educating and counseling students (at school), visiting patients in their homes, helping with medical care and food, conducting lessons to educate people on the dangers of HIV and how to prevent themselves from getting infected.
Working in the HIV/AIDS volunteer program can be a real eye opener on the pandemic disease that is scaring to wipe out families.
Our program is organized in collaboration with the Government of Kenya institutions and community based organization CBOs who are working very closely with the communities and HIV/Aids patients
Your role as a volunteer
Your main role will be to support the program working in the volunteer centers placed. You could find yourself working in the community, orphanage, neighboring schools, educating and counseling students (at school), visiting patients in their homes, helping with medical care and food, conducting lessons to educate people on the dangers of HIV but whatever you work, your help will be needed in giving support to the day-to-day program activity .
Any other help in any form to benefit the program will be greatly appreciated.
The skills you need
Volunteering work in the Voluntary Counseling Center (VCT) is crucial and volunteers with counseling experience are highly required. You should be able to approach your role as a volunteer with an open mind. Any extra skills that you can bring to the table to be utilized to benefit the program will be highly appreciated.
Accommodation and meals included
Locally-owned and locally-run accommodation is part of your program fee. Whether you stay in a home stay, a local guesthouse or a volunteer house, you can be rest assured that a part of your fee will make a change to the local community which means that before you even lift a finger at your project you'll have already made a small but significant contribution.
The vast majority of our placement accommodation is based on host family occupancy. This is beneficial in a number of ways over a hotel stay. We carefully select local families in order to house our volunteers in a safe and secure area. Kenyans are very friendly and warm and will afford you the level of privacy and service you require. Often the homes will have children who may occasional ask you help them with their homework or watch them play. The parents will treat you as family and be able to offer you lots of advice and local information along with our support staff during your first few days. You will be provided with two nutritious meals each day, consisting of breakfast and dinner prepared from locally sourced produce. It is exciting to stay with a family; that way you will learn the Kenyan way of life, meet local people, eat local food and engage in local customs and traditions. Volunteers can expect to share a room with one or two other volunteers. Regardless of the tribe or culture your host family is from, they will be sure to give you a good Kenyan treat.
