The program Overview
This is a rewarding and fulfilling program that offers you the chance to work with children. Volunteers are placed in community schools, public schools or orphanages.

Your role as a volunteer
The work you will undertake as a volunteer will partly be determined by the project you are working with and your own interests. You could find yourself teaching, playing sports with the children among other activities. At the orphanages you'll help with preparing meals, feeding and cleaning the children, along with general cleaning around the centre. Wherever you work, your help will be needed in encouraging the children and giving them the support, care and attention they deserve.

The skills you need
The most important thing you need to work at this project is a love of children and a commitment to the work at the project. You should be flexible, as there are a range of different activities to get involved in and you will also need to be patient, due to the large numbers of children at the projects. It is also important to understand and be sensitive to the fact that many of the children come from difficult backgrounds. Any extra skills that you can bring to the table; including music, sports or more vocational areas, can be utilized to benefit the children.

Accommodation and meals included
Locally-owned and locally-run accommodation is part of your program fee. Whether you stay in a home stay, a local guesthouse or a volunteer house, you can be rest assured that a part of your fee will make a change to the local community which means that before you even lift a finger at your project you'll have already made a small but significant contribution.

The vast majority of our placement accommodation is based on host family occupancy. This is beneficial in a number of ways over a hotel stay. We carefully select local families in order to house our volunteers in a safe and secure area. Kenyans are very friendly and warm and will afford you the level of privacy and service you require. Often the homes will have children who may occasional ask you help them with their homework or watch them play. The parents will treat you as family and be able to offer you lots of advice and local information along with our support staff during your first few days.

You will be provided with two nutritious meals each day, consisting of breakfast and dinner prepared from locally sourced produce. It is exciting to stay with a family; that way you will learn the Kenyan way of life, meet local people, eat local food and engage in local customs and traditions. Volunteers can expect to share a room with one or two other volunteers. Regardless of the tribe or culture your host family is from, they will be sure to give you a good Kenyan treat.

Project resources and advice
The projects are often under-resourced, but items like paper and pencils can be bought very cheaply in-country, but if you wish to bring some items from home such as any English language resources story books, craft materials, clothing and sports equipment to help you in your program, it would be really appreciated.

Airport pick-up included                       
In country airport transfers is included. Please book your flight to arrive into Nairobi (airport code NBO). Should you arrive a day or two early, then an additional charge of roughly USD$ 20 per night will be made in-country directly to September 10 Rescue Center.
